Animal Kingdom

Picture
This park is WDWs newest and probably the most unique. Animal Kingdom is about the magic of actual living things with its replicas of exotic places in the wild and its shows and attractions about wildlife on the land, under the sea, and in the prehistoric past. This park is very different in comparison to other parks at WDW in that it needs to be explored. There are popular rides that should not be missed here; but some of Animal Kingdom's best sights and experiences are not audio-animatronic or were designed by Imagineers, but living and breathing animals themselves which aren't controlled making each trip to this park a new experience.

This is a BIG park; and for some reason, it always feels hotter here. Therefore, this park can be tiring which is unfortunate because it's a park that needs to be explored and enjoyed. Be sure to hydrate and rest often at this park; and plan to break up your day with This park also closes earlier than other WDW parks, so be sure to plan accordingly for your trip.

The Oasis

The Oasis is your passageway from the parking lot and park entrance to a very different world which is Animal Kingdom. The Oasis is serves the same purpose as Main Street USA and Hollywood Boulevard do for Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios respectively; however, this entry way has no shops or restaurants. The Oasis consists of several paths cutting through lush foliage and over streams and even under rockwork; but all the paths lead to a clearing where you see the Tree of Life in all its grandeur up ahead! The Oasis serves to set the tone for this park and sends the message to guests that this park is different than other theme parks, needs to be explored, and is about natural wonders rather than the man-made. Many people hurry through the Oasis, but we urge you to take your time and explore the paths where you will find a variety of birds and small animals.

Discovery Island

Picture
Discovery Island is like the hub in Magic Kingdom where you find Cinderella Castle and paths branch towards different themed lands. Discovery Island is the hub of Animal Kingdom with the Tree of Life at its center and paths branching off to Dinoland USA, Camp Minnie-Mickey, Africa, and Asia. Discovery Island has its own paths that wind around the base of the Tree of Life and hold different animal exhibits. It's also home to several shops, restaurants, and It's Tough to Be a Bug 3-D show located inside the Tree of Life! Definitely plan to set aside time to enjoy this location!

It's Tough to Be a Bug:    5 Glass Slippers
This is a 3-D show located inside the Tree of Life on Discovery Island. This attraction has one of the best lines to wait in property because it takes you up close to the trunk of the tree for a great look at the carvings; and then it takes you below the tree where you wait among giant roots and stones, just like what bugs see! Before entering the theater, you are given 3-D glasses which look like bug eyes complete with attenaes which makes you honorary bugs, according to Flik your host from Pixar's Bug's Life film. Flik is there to show you different species of bugs, including a smell stink bug! However, things get a little out of control when a large, audio-animatronic Hopper shows up! But as always, everything turns out okay in the end; but kids may be a little frightened at the effects of this attraction and Hopper himself. Also watch out at the end of the show when Flik asks for you to wait until all bugs have exited, you will feel them leave under your feet and in the back of your seat! Overall, this is a clever, funny, and entertaining show; but it may frighten some viewers and those who aren't a fan of bugs themselves. If this show sounds like fun to you, definitely give it a try!

Discovery Island Trails:    5 Glass Slippers
These trails are subtle and wind around the base of the Tree of Life to give you a look at some animal exhibits that you may not see from the main path and give you a close look at the magnificent carvings on the tree. These paths are great escapes from the crowd and provide great photo-ops. Be sure to explore!

Camp Minnie-Mickey

This section of Animal Kingdom is mainly geared towards kids. It is themed with a more woodsy, summer camp decor and showcases Mickey and his friends enjoying the outdoors. Camp Minnie-Mickey has a popular show and character trails to visit; but next to the Oasis, this section of the park probably offers the least amount of things to do or buy in Animal Kingdom. Despite, I definitely recommend visiting this land, especially if you have kids. Also, this section of the park offers plenty of photo-ops so when you visit so be sure to have your camera ready!

Festival of the Lion King:    3 Glass Slippers
At this air conditioned show, the stage is located in the center of the theater with seating going around the perimeter. During the show floats or stages are brought out with characters from the film; but the real stars of the show are the costumed singers. They perform popular songs from the film and some new ones too. Kids are invited to participate in the show, especially if they are sitting on the front row. Many people who visit WDW are fans of this show; however, I'm not. I have seen it and found it enjoyable, but it has never been a priority on our vacations. This isn't due to the lack of talent of the singers and performers; but as a major Lion King fan, I was looking for more emphasis on the film's characters. Regardless, I have included this show on the site because it is so popular with guests, has a talented cast, and it's hard to go wrong with the Lion King.

Character Trails:    5 Glass Slippers
There are several character trails at Camp Minnie-Mickey which are great for kids and for photo-ops. The characters primarily consist of Mickey, Minnie, and the gang dressed in safari clothing, and other animal characters from Disney films such as Baloo and King Louie from the Jungle Book, Terk from Tarzan, Rafiki from the Lion King, and even Tigger and Pooh. These character trails are great because you get to see some characters that are rare in other parks, as well as popular characters in different apparel.

Africa

Picture
Kilimanjaro Safaris
Animal Kingdom's Africa offers one of WDW's best attractions, Kilimanjaro Safaris, a trail showcasing African wildlife, and a replica of an African village called "Harambe" that was created to allow guests to feel as if they truly are in Africa! The detail of Harambe village is excellent, be sure to take time to enjoy the little things Imagineer's put into this part of Animal Kingdom. Africa is also home to Tusker House, a restaurant that offers a character breakfast with Mickey and friends in safari gear. Africa also has two attractions, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Pangani Forest Exploration Train, both which should not be missed! A camera is a must!

Kilimanjaro Safaris:    5 Glass Slippers
This is one of the best attractions at WDW and great for all ages! The story of this attraction is that you are in Africa and are going to take a safari trip through a wildlife reserve. You board a safari/tram and head into the African savannah where your guide/driver tells you what animals may be where and provides information about them. On your safari, you may see zebras, lions, giraffes, elephants, tall termite mounds, hippos, and more! Also, don't worry about which side of the safari vehicle you may find yourself, you will get a great view of animals no matter what. During your safari, your safari vehicle will be radioed about poachers in the area that need to be stopped. Your safari will be cut short to help catch the poachers; and after a race through the jungle, you succeed. This is an attraction that is different every time you ride it because you never know what the animals might be doing or where they'll be or what you will see! Our last trip, we actually got to see two elephants fighting one another. This is also a great attraction for young kids because they get to see a variety of animals in one attraction that makes a trip to the zoo really pale in comparison. Ride at least once! Every age will enoy!

Pangani Forest Exploration Trail:    4 Glass Slippers
This trail is located near the exit of Kilimanjaro Safaris. This is a walking trail that takes you by a number of exhibits showing monkeys, okapi, hippos, meerkats, and gorillas. Along this trail, you will enter a building where you see naked mole rats, and an aviary where you get to see a variety of birds. We highly recommend experiencing this trail. You get great views of the animals, are free to walk and watch at your own pace, and is great for all ages.

Other Attractions:    Rafiki's Planet Watch

Asia

Picture
When you enter Asia, you enter the mythical, Asian kingdom of Anandapur which contains crumbling ruins, detailed shops and storefronts, a few places to eat, and four attractions, including the massive Expedition Everest. This is my favorite section of Animal Kingdom due to the design and detail here.

Maharajah Jungle Trek:    4.5 Glass Slippers
This is another walking trail with ruins and an Asian decor displaying beautiful Tigers, Komodo Dragons, Tapirs, Gibbons (a type of ape), and bats. You can see the bats in a specific area; but be aware that there is nothing separaing you from the bats. If you don't like the sound of this, don't worry. You can easily skip this area. You can walk this trail at your own pace and it's great for all ages! Be sure to see!

Expedition Everest:    5 Glass Slippers
This is one of the best attractions in all of WDW and Animal Kingdom's newest and most popular. It's also the newest addition to WDW's mountain range, joining the ranks of Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain. Expedition Everest also has one of the best story lines and lines to wait in. Expedition Everest is a roller coast that speeds you inside and out Mt. Everest; and at one point, even backwards! In true Disney fashion, the storyline of this attraction begins in line where you talk through an exploration base in a village in Nepal. There are supplies, climbing gear, and exhibits showcasing evidence of the legendary Yeti who lives on the mountain. Now you are going on a exploration venture up to the mountain. You board a train that chugs you up the mountain, through a temple offering sacrifices to appease the Yeti, and into the mountain. However, you won't get far because it looks like the Yeti tore up the tracks! Now your train goes rocketing backwards through the dark mountain trying to escape! You will go forwards again, inside and out, see a shadow of the Yeti, and finally the Yeti himself if you look up and hard enough. This attraction is fast and dark at times, and goes backwards at one point; but overall, its not that scary. The only point where you actually see the large, audio-animatronic yeti is near the end and above your head. A lot of people miss seeing it completely. Also be aware that going backwards can make some people quesy. Overall, this is a great attraction and definitely worth a shot! Ride at least once!

Other Attractions:    Kali River Rapids; Flights of Wonder
Kali River Rapids is a wet, wild raft ride that takes you through the jungle, down in incline, and past burning logs due to loggers. This attraction serves to give you a thrill and to educate; however, in our opinion, we don't see this ride as a must because we think it doesn't live up to Disney's standards and completely soaks you through! While this may feel good on a hot day, it can get uncomfortable.

Dinoland U.S.A

Dinoland USA consists of two sections: an archeology/realistic section and a whismy, prehistoric carnival style section. In my opinion, the former is the best section. Dinoland is home to several attractions and dining locations; and while there aren't any live animals here, Dinoland still offers amazing sights and experiences. Dinoland is also a great place for kids.

The Bonyard:    5 Glass Slippers
The Boneyard is a playground for kids that resembles a paleontogist dig site. This area is very detailed and clever, great for fun photos! Along with areas for kids to climb and slide, there is a covered area for kids to dig up and uncover fake dinosaur bones and a full skeleton! While this is fun place for kids, its also a great place for parents to slow down and get off their feet. If you aren't traveling with kids, I still encourage you to take a peek at this area!

Primeval Whirl:    4 Glass Slippers
In our opinion, this attraction is the only reason to visit this carnival-like section of Dinoland. This is a small coaster that seats four guests in a circular vehicle that rotates as you quickly slip and dip down the track. The story of this ride is that your vehicle is a time machine and you've gone back in time with flying astroids and dinos. This ride is outside, is meant to look cartoonish; and therefore, it definitely lacks in story. However, the ride itself is suprisingly thrilling and a lot of fun! Be warned that this ride can be rough, quick, and make some queasy.

Other Attractions:    Dinosaur, Triceratop Spin, Cretaceous Trail, and Finding Nemo: The Musical!
I'm sure that most people will disagree, but we're just not fans of this Finding Nemo show. I found it entertaing, just not great and at times boring. Therefore, we usually skip it. Also, we're not big fans of Dinosaur. It's a really rough ride, all of the scenery and audio-animatronic dinosaurs are really close to the car, and the ending where it looks like you're going right into the huge dino's mouth is not fun but downright terrifying.
