Dining at WDW

Picture
In addition to characters and attractions, dining at Disney can add to the magic of your vacation. Disney offers dozens of restaurants with a variety of  menu offerings, locations, themes, and characters!

Dining at Disney ranges from traditional theme park fare with a Disney twist to delicious, fine dining with magical experiences. Just like your favorite attractions, Disney employs the tool of storytelling when you dine. For example, you can dine in an Italian restaurant inspired by Lady and the Tramp, or in a kitchen back in the 50's, or even in Cinderella Castle for a royal dinner! Whatever restaurant you choose, you are in for an adventure!

But with all the restaurants offered at WDW, it can be hard to choose! That's why have compiled a list of restaurants that we personally recommend!

Table Service Restaurants

Picture
50's Prime Time Café: 4 Glass Slippers
This restaurant takes you back in time to the 1950s where the staff is part of your family and is bent on enforcing good manners and a clean plate! 50s Prime Time Café can be found at Hollywood Studios and is decorated like at 50s style kitchen, including old fashioned television sets showing clips from old 50s sitcoms and even the Wonderful World of Disney! The real entertainment comes from the waiters and waitresses, who refer to themselves as Cousin or Uncle or Aunt something or other. They are strict, but comical, and make you feel as if you're ten years old again! Warning: be sure to keep your elbows off the table, clean your plate, and wash your hands before eating! The menu consists of old fashioned, home cooked favorites, like pot roast; and for dessert, you can even enjoy s'mores! Why we like it: the experience is  unique and something the whole family won't forget and you are sure to laugh your way through your meal!

Akershus: 4 Glass Slippers
This Epcot restaurant calls the Norway pavilion home and is designed after a Norwegian castle, offering guests a royal setting in which to enjoy both meats, cheeses, and fruits at a small buffet, as well as whatever they choose from the menu. With the exception of breakfast, Akershus fare has a Norwegian flavor; but it's very mild and delicious! Akershus is also a character meal all throughout the day and features visits from popular Disney princesses, as well as a special photo op with Belle in her ball gown upon entry! Why we like it: it's a cultural experience and a great character buffet! Plus, the mini-buffet is a great bonus which you don't have to pay extra for! It also serves as a perfect alternative to Cinderella's Royal Table!

Boatwrights: 3.5 Glass Slippers
Found at Port Orleans Riverside, Boatwrights is a hidden dining destination which offers a craftsmanship theme and Southern comfort. The menu here is unique in that it's Southern, but with a New Orleans flare, offering such dishes as crawfish, jambalaya, pecan pie, and banana foster! Yum! Why we like it: warm atmosphere and excellent menu! It's also relatively easy to get a reservation here.

Chefs de France: 4 Glass Slippers
This Epcot restaurant offers some of France's most popular dishes and truly makes you feel as if you are dining in a Parisian restaurant! The food here is excellent, especially for those who enjoy cheese, and the lunch menu offers a great, three course meal value! Remy from Pixar's Ratatouille, is known to make appearances at certain times throughout the day on a tray, along with the help of a chef! Why we like it: the lunch menu is fabulous and the menu is a cultural dining experience, but safe enough for even picky eaters. We have also found the service here to be some of Disney's best!

Cinderella's Royal Table: 4 Glass Slippers
One of the most popular restaurants on property, Cinderella's Royal Table is inside of Cinderella Castle! The medieval setting, with a view of Fantasyland, is a dream come true which is only made better with the presence of popular Disney princesses! The menu here is fancy; and, in our opinion, could be better. However, the experience itself is something you and your family won't soon forget! Why we like it: the setting and experience!

Chef Mickey's: 4 Glass Slippers
Located in the lobby of the Contemporary Resort, Chef Mickey's is a character meal buffet featuring Mickey and the gang in chef apparel, not far from where the Monorail is picking up and dropping off guests! The American buffet at Chef Mickey's is one of the best and there is something for everyone, including a small kid's buffet! Why we like it: The atmosphere is fun and casual and all about families, and the food is some of the best for buffet.

Le Cellier: 5 Glass Slippers
Probably one of the best, if not the best, restaurant on property, Le Cellier can be found at Epcot's Canada pavilion. Le Cellier is a steakhouse which offers the most delicious steak you will probably ever have, along with their famous Cheddar Cheese Soup and Pretzel Bread! Why we like it: the famous Filet Mignon with Mushroom Risotto. It can be very difficult to get reservations, so book as early as possible!

Located in the Magic Kingdom's Liberty Square, Liberty Tree Tavern takes you back in time to the Colonial days in a restaurant featuring American fare and a historical theme! With one of the coolest dining rooms on property, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater is very popular and is truly a dining experience! At this Hollywood Studios restaurant, you get to dine in an old fashioned car and enjoy some delicious burgers and milkshakes, among other family-happy items, while watching a large movie screen show clips from old monster flicks and Disney cartoons! The Grand Floridian Café: 4 Glass Slippers
This restaurant offers all of the luxury and style of the Grand Floridian, but without the sky-high price tag! This restaurant is all about casual elegance with it's bright, airy setting; and the menu offers something for everyone. Why we like it: the Grand Floridian atmosphere and because it is a Disney dining secret! The Café is one of the few restaurants on property that are easy to get in to without an ADR; but keep in mind, this isn't always the case!

Counter Service Dining/Snacks

Picture
Aloha Isle:    5 Glass Slippers
This snack stand is located in Adventureland is home to one of WDW's best kept secret snacks: the Dole Whip! A Dole Whip is pineapple flavored soft serve is absolutely delicious and refreshing. You can have also have a Dole Whip float which features the soft serve in pineapple juice (my personal favorite). Aloha Isle is also home to other snacks that you may not find around the resort, such as pineapple spears, pineapple juice, and coke and root beer floats.

Columbia Harbor House: 5 Glass Slippers
This is our family's favorite place for a quick meal or a snack featuring a colonial New England nautical theme in Liberty Square of Magic Kingdom. The detail in this counter service location is just as good as any restaurant on property. One of our favorite things about Columbia Harbor House is that it's two stories, but most people don't realize that. The second floor is dark, cool, typically quiet, and offers privacy along with windows overlooking the park. This is often a good rendezvous point for our family to get off our feet and cool off. In addition to the great building, Columbia Harbor House also has a great menu with good prices. Their clam chowder is excellent and can be used as a snack option on the Disney Dining Plan. They also have fried fish, caesar salads, and iced tea.

Sunshine Seasons: 5 Glass Slippers
This counter service restaurant located in Epcot's The Land pavilion is, next to Columbia Harbor House, one of my personal favorite places to eat at WDW. Sunshine Seasons has a cafeteria setup but with four different stations with different menus. It's important to note that the food here is very healthy and very different from your typical greasy theme park fare. My favorite selection here is a sandwich (which is huge) on ciabbata bread with a side of potato salad. The desserts here are also excellent for a counter service location. Be sure to try the deliciously creamy creme brule' and strawberry shortcake piled tall and high with whipped creme! To make Sunshine Seasons even better is that is next door to Soarin' and you can see where the fruits and vegetables you are served is grown on Living with the Land attraction.

Casey's Corner: 4 Glass Slippers
Casey's is located in Magic Kingdom at the end of Main Street USA on the left hand side. Casey's is a vintage baseball themed counter service location offering delicious hot dogs, corn dog nuggets, and cracker jacks just as good as you would find at a baseball game or a county fair. If you are going to buy a hot dog on vacation, this is the place. If you pass through the doorway to the right of the counters where you order, you will find an eating area with not only tables but also bleachers facing a screen showing a loop of sports themed Goofy cartoons. The decor, espcially the bleacher seating area, is excellent. This is a great place for sports enthusiasts, Dads, and kids.

Boulangerie Patisserie: 5 Glass Slippers
This counter service location sells pastries, such as e'clairs, croissants, cookies, and a variety of tarts. This bakery also has light meal options like sandwiches, cheese plates, and quiche. This is a popular spot with delicious sweets and offerings for a light, tasty meal. Be sure to check it out!

Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe:    4 Glass Slippers
This bakery is located in Epcot's Norway pavilion. The menu offered here consists of sweet pretzels, cloudberry horns, Norwegian school bread and rice cream, and sandwiches. While you may be unfamiliar with some of the Norwegian fare, be adventurous and give it a shot. It's very popular!

The Disney Dining Plan

We highly recommend using Disney's Dining Plan on your vacation. It's definitely worth it!  With the Dining Plan, you pay one flat fee and are granted a certain number of meals and snacks. This makes budgeting MUCH easier, reduces stress, and can actually save you money. With the DDP, you can dine in some of Disney's most expensive restaurants and not pay any more than what you paid for the plan.

WDW categorizes dining into three categories: Snacks, Quick Service, and Table Service. There is also a Signature Dining category for Disney's most elite restaurants, but these locations are few.

Snacks consist of popcorn, sweets, ice cream, fruit, bottled water, soft drinks, and etc.

Quick Service is themed cafeteria style/food court dining with offerings from burgers and fries to sandwiches to salads.

Table Service is restaurant style dining with a variety of menus and themed experiences.

You should also know that there are different types of dining plans available. The first is a Quick Service Dining Plan, where only quick service establishments and snacks are available for you. This is the cheapest plan. The second is the Standard Dining Plan, which grants you one quick service meal and one table service meal, along with a number of snacks, per day. This is the plan that we recommend! Finally, there is the Deluxe Dining Plan which gives you several table service meals; and it is also the most expensive. Visit Disney World's dining plan page for more information.

Advance Dining Reservations

Picture
Restaurants at Walt Disney World are very popular and often book up months in advance! Therefore, if you want to have a meal at one of Disney's park or resort restaurants, we suggest you book an ADR, an Advance Dining Reservation.

You can call and book a reservation or do so online. We personally prefer booking online so that we can all of our options and play around with different dining times for the best fit for our family and vacation schedule. However, regardless of how you book, some of the more popular meals and Character Meals will require your credit card number; but unless you cancel your reservation last minute, you won't be charged.

Now if you don't want to book an ADR, or you're at that parks and decide to have a sit down meal on a whim, there are a few undiscovered restaurants that usually don't fill up or at least have a reasonable wait. So if you're in a pinch, we recommend Fort Wilderness' Trails End, Kona Cafe at the Polynesian, many of the restaurants at the World Showcase (except for Canada's Le Cellier), The Plaza at the Magic Kingdom, as well as many of the moderate resorts table service restaurants. For more, check out our list of Overlooked Disney Restaurants.
